Any dental emergency should be treated as soon as possible. Ignoring a dental issue can increase the risk of permanent damage and may result in the need for more extensive and expensive dental treatment in the future. If you feel that you can't wait until the morning, seek immediate treatment.
Here is a list of common dental emergencies with a quick summary of what to do if you are unable to receive immediate treatment:
Use warm water to rinse your mouth to clean any debris. And gently floss your teeth to remove any particles. Then apply a cold compress on your cheek. Taking Advil may also help relieve the pain. For a more holistic approach, rubbing a tiny amount of clove oil on your gums may temporarily ease toothache pain.
If your toothache is so acute that you are unable to sleep or bite down and over-the-counter medications are not helping to reduce the pain, seek immediate treatment.
Be sure to rinse gently with warm water and save any pieces you find. If there is bleeding, apply clean gauze to the area until the bleeding stops. If there is pain or swelling, apply a cold compress outside the mouth, near the affected area. To alleviate the pain, rub clove oil on the area or take an over-the-counter pain reliever. Seek treatment as soon as possible.
Retrieve your tooth and seek immediate treatment. Your tooth has a much higher chance of being saved if it can be replace within an hour of being displaced.
If your tooth has been dislodged, hold it by the crown (the top part), rinse it gently and, if possible, place it back into the socket. Do not apply pressure and be sure that it is facing the right way. If it does not slip back into place, store the tooth in a clean container with a little milk (if milk is not available, water with a pinch of table salt) and bring it with you to us.
If you are in pain, pick up a little clove oil (usually available at your pharmacy in the dental aisle) and dab a little on the tooth, or take an over-the-counter pain reliever.
If you are unable to reach us, go to the emergency room.
A tooth abscess (pocket of pus that is caused by a bacterial infection) can become serious condition if left untreated as the infection can spread to other parts of your body.
Contact us as soon as possible if you discover an abcess. In the meantime, ease the pain by rinsing your mouth with a mild salt water solution (1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day.
The best temporary solution is to use a small wad of sugarless gum to pad the open cavity. And contact our maple dental office now to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
